New Year, New You: Rejuvenate Your Sex Life with a Penile Implant
If health conditions, such as erectile dysfunction (ED) and Peyronie’s disease, have taken a toll on your sex life, you might be feeling defeated. While poor sexual function is often dismissed and associated with the natural effects of aging, there are treatments.
Paul Chung, MD, FACS, and our team at our practices in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, want you to know that you don’t have to settle for an unsatisfactory sex life. Dr. Chung is a reconstructive surgeon recognized for his expertise in penile implant surgery.
If conservative treatments have been unsuccessful at addressing ED or other issues impacting sexual function, a surgically placed penile device is a viable option that can restore sexual wellness.
In this month’s blog, we want to discuss the safety and efficacy of the two types of penile implants and how they can help you reclaim your sexual health in 2026.
Understanding inflatable devices
An inflatable penile device consists of multiple parts, including cylinders, a pump, and a saline pouch. It’s all placed under the skin, making it a very discreet device.
During this surgery, Dr. Chung starts by placing two cylinders inside your penis, a pump in your scrotum, and a saline pouch in your lower abdomen. Tubes then connect the cylinders to the pump and saline pouch.
After a six-week recovery period, you’ll learn to use the device. Whenever you want to have an erection, you activate the device via the pump in your scrotum. The pump sends the saline from your abdomen to the cylinders located in your penis, giving your penis the firmness needed for sex.
The device will keep your penis erect as long as it's activated, even after achieving orgasm. To make your penis flaccid again, simply deactivate the device.
Understanding semi-rigid rods
Semi-rigid (malleable) rods are devices that aren’t inflatable. Instead, they’re rods made of metal wires or coils that have a silicone covering, which makes them firm but flexible. Since these rods are simple and don’t have multiple parts, the surgery and its recovery period are shorter.
Unlike an inflatable device, the semi-rigid rods are always firm. To use your penis for sex, you simply extend it into position. You can achieve orgasm with this device and then press your penis to push it back towards your body.
This option is less likely to malfunction and is great for those with limited dexterity. However, it can be harder to conceal and puts more pressure on your penis since it's always slightly rigid.
Reclaim your sex life with a penile implant
If injections, pills, and other treatments for ED and other sexual dysfunction issues have been unsuccessful at restoring sexual health, penile implant surgery might be right for you.
