Paul H. Chung, MD is Professor of Urology and Director of Men's Health and Reconstructive Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He is actively involved in clinical research to improve outcomes and quality of life for his patients. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed research studies. His research focuses on one question: how can men facing urologic reconstructive surgery get safer, longer-lasting, and more satisfying results? Most of his work involves implanted devices, like penile implants and artificial urinary sphincters, and repair of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body.
A major part of this work is preventing and understanding infection around implants. Working with laboratory scientists, his team studies how bacteria form protective layers called biofilms on devices, and which rinses and antibiotic soaks best protect an implant at the time of surgery. They also test DNA-based methods that identify bacteria that standard cultures can miss.
He also uses large national and international health databases covering many thousands of patients. These studies show how often complications happen and which patients may be at higher risk. Their aim is to help surgeons and patients have honest, well-informed conversations before surgery.
PENILE IMPLANTS
===============
A penile implant (inflatable penile prosthesis) is a reliable, long-term treatment for erectile dysfunction when pills or injections no longer work. Infection is the complication patients and surgeons worry about most, so much of Dr. Chung's work focuses on preventing it. His lab studies have shown that the coating on certain implants can absorb antibiotic solutions and hold them on the device surface, and that antifungal medicines can be added to these solutions without weakening them. His team also uses DNA sequencing to identify bacteria on implants more completely than standard cultures. They also study real-world outcomes in large patient databases, such as whether common medications like hormone therapy for prostate cancer or newer diabetes drugs affect implant safety. Other work includes the use of opioid pain medicine after surgery and the emotional and quality-of-life effects of treatment.

ARTIFICIAL URINARY SPHINCTER
============================
Leakage of urine with coughing, lifting, or exercise is common after prostate cancer treatment. The artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) is a small implanted device that gently closes the urethra and lets a man open it with a pump when he needs to urinate. It is considered the gold-standard surgery for moderate to severe leakage. Dr. Chung's research includes one of the largest studies following men with an AUS, which identified which patients face higher risks of needing another surgery. Other studies examine the bacteria found on removed devices, how low testosterone affects outcomes, and a simple office test for grading leakage severity that helps match each man to the right procedure. He has also written reviews of all surgical options for male incontinence.

BURIED PENIS
============
Buried penis occurs when the penis is hidden beneath surrounding skin and fatty tissue, often related to weight. It can make urination, hygiene, and sexual activity difficult and can lead to skin infections. Dr. Chung's research studied surgical repair that removes excess tissue from the lower abdomen and covers the penis with a skin graft. Patients had lasting improvements in function and quality of life. The study also found that a higher body mass index (BMI) raises the chance of complications, which helps guide counseling before surgery.

PEYRONIE'S DISEASE
==================
Peyronie's disease is scar tissue inside the penis that causes curvature, indentation, or shortening, and it can make intercourse painful or impossible. It is more common than many people realize and often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Dr. Chung's work includes patient-focused reviews of the condition and research on how patients move through different treatments. His studies found that certain connective-tissue disorders, such as Marfan syndrome, are linked to higher risk. Surgical studies have shown that curvature can be safely straightened during penile implant surgery, and that men treated with an implant plus straightening report high satisfaction.

URETHRAL STRICTURE & URETHRAL RECONSTRUCTION
============================================
A urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra caused by scar tissue, which can result from injury, infection, radiation, or prior procedures. It leads to a weak urine stream, straining, and urinary infections. Urethroplasty, a surgery that removes or widens the scarred segment, offers the best long-term cure. Dr. Chung's research shows that most men do not need further procedures after urethroplasty, and that people prone to abnormal scarring have higher rates of stricture coming back. With national trauma research groups, he has studied severe urethral injuries from pelvic fractures and how they are best treated in the first days after injury. Other work includes ultrasound imaging that can map scar tissue before surgery, quality-of-life measures that matter to patients, and ways to reduce opioid use after surgery.
